Buttercream Frosting

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (227g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 4 cups (500g) powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 2-4 tablespoons heavy cream or whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or other flavoring, such as almond or lemon)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (optional, to cut sweetness)

Instructions:

  1. Beat the Butter:

    • In a large mixing bowl, use a hand or stand mixer to beat the softened butter on medium-high speed for 2-3 minutes, until smooth and creamy.
    • Add Powdered Sugar:

    • Lower the mixer speed to low, and gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, about 1 cup at a time, until fully incorporated. This helps prevent a sugar cloud!

    • Add Flavor & Cream:

    • Mix in the vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream (or milk). If the frosting feels too thick, add more cream 1 tablespoon at a time until you reach your desired consistency.

    • Whip for Texture:

    • Increase the mixer speed to high and whip the frosting for 2-3 minutes. This makes the frosting fluffy, smooth, and easy to pipe.

    • Adjust Consistency if Needed:

    • If your frosting feels too soft, add more powdered sugar (1/4 cup at a time). If it’s too stiff, add a bit more cream or milk.

    • Optional Step: Add Color:

    • If you want colored frosting, add gel food coloring at this stage. Gel colors work best as they don’t change the frosting’s consistency.

Tips for Piping Success:

  • Chill if Needed: If your kitchen is warm, place the frosting in the fridge for about 10-15 minutes before piping.
  • Use the Right Tip: For sharp designs (like rosettes or stars), use closed or open star piping tips.
  • Test Consistency: Squeeze a little frosting through the piping tip before decorating to ensure it holds its shape.

This frosting will stay firm at room temperature but also melts smoothly on the tongue. It’s the perfect choice if you need both stability and elegance!
